Cosign Wit Nas Cause Hip Hop Is Dead
The other night I making some beats. I was on wikipedia looking at Lupe Fiasco’s discography to see what songs were sampled in his beats so I could look for similar songs on Pandora.com for my beats. Food and Liquor and The Cool are two of my favorite albums of all time. I proceeded to look at the songs sampled in Food and Liquor (because samples from The Cool were not listed) and noticed that his album only went gold, which is equal to 500,000 copies. I proceeded to shout expletives (lol) and continued to be baffled by the situation. I couldn’t understand how an album with such lyrical content and quality could only go gold. Then it hit me. Hip Hop is dead. I say this for many reasons, one of them being the relevance of 2 genres. I feel like rap and hip hop have similarities but over the years have grown to be different. I feel like rap is more the more commercial genre. I feel like this is what record labels push to make money. I see a lot of rap as simple and ridiculous, sometimes overly violently and nonsensical. Some songs put out by artists are purely rap in essence, with no type of lyrical content.... unless your looking to hear about drugs, "bitches", and killing people then sure, rap is that piff. Hip Hop is has something/ a subject to talk about and by a subject i mean something worth wild. Lupe's cd (2nd one) contains and myraid of various topics. He addresses the child soilders in Africa and else where in the world, he discusses how people want rap to be "dumbed down". His first cd also covers many topics that are not talked about as much. Lately I've just been baffled with the content that makes the air ways these days, especially since the onlyplay superstar everywhere. No doubt its a good song, but there are other song Lupe has. Maybe one day things will change.
